DOWNING PARK

  • Downing Park is the largest of several public parks inside the city.

  • The park was designed in the late 19th century by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, who are most famous for their designs of Central and Prospect Park

  • Olmsted and Vaux gave the design to the city on the condition it would be named after their mentor, Andrew Jackson Downing, who was born in Newburgh and who had died in a steamboat accident on the Hudson River in 1852

THE FUTURE

New leadership is creating a new trajectory for Newburgh with:

  • A growing and committed arts community

  • New local political leadership that is making real progress on ridding the city of crime and corruption

  • A renewed focus on safety, transportation, and beautification

  • New state policies that will attract entrepreneurship and build on the city's history as an innovator

Dwellstead believes that Newburgh—with the spirit and commitment of community members, both current and newly arriving, is on its way to  becoming the thriving city it once was a half a century ago.
